Catch the snow and plan a winter break
June to August
Ttreat yourself to a cosy B&B, lodge or country hideaway. Delicious dinners, roaring log fires, bracing walks and lazy brunches. Winter is the perfect time to savour the delights of Kaikoura’s ocean larder – fresh fish and seafood. Enjoy the ambience of dining rooms offering spectacular ocean and mountain views.
With snow on the mountains, could Kaikoura ever look more spectacular? Skiing and boarding at Mt Lyford only a short drive away means plenty of time on the slopes.
Back at ground level, enjoy the thrills and spills of the stock car racing weekend. Be inspired and amazed by the costumes at the Trash to Fashion show. Creativity is in the air – check out the Eco Art Week culminating in the sell-out Recycled Trash to Fashion show.
Maori heritage is reflected in the name Kaikoura. Tama ki Te Rangi arrived in the area many hundreds of years ago & he was tired and hungry. He found an abundance of crayfish and named the area Te Ahi Kaikoura a Tama ki Te Rangi – the fire that cooked the crayfish of Tama ki Te Rangi.
