Catch the falling leaves without the crowds of summer

March to May

Early autumn is ideal for a back country adventure full of autumn colours. Did you know that Mt Tapuae–O-uenuku (the tallest mountain in the area at 2885m) was used by the late Sir Edmund Hillary while training for the ascent of Everest?

With settled sea conditions, autumn really is the ideal time to view the many species of marine mammals and birdlife which inhabit the coastal waters. Along side the sperm whales and other species which stay in Kaikoura all year round, autumn welcomes many visiting wildlife from around the world. As many seabirds head off for warmer waters, those escaping the harsh southern winters take their place such as the Antarctic Fulmar.

Or take a gentle stroll along the Fyffe Palmer bush track. Autumn brings harvest - visit the vineyards and sample the best vintages Kaikoura has to offer.

Explore Kaikoura’s artistic side. Follow the Art Trail and meet the many artists and craftspeople who find their inspiration in the stunning environment.

Or unwind with some “me time” and spa treatments.

As the days shorten, discover the magic of the night sky with some star gazing.
